Save money while at University

Another little post about getting ready for university, this time I’m going let you know the items you should get your hands on in order to save as much money as you can while shopping.

Nectar Card

This is especially useful if you plan to shop in Sainsbury’s rack up points by scanning your nectar card every time you shop. And as well as Sainsbury’s you can earn points shopping on sites like Amazon.co.ukArgos.co.uk, Ebay.co.uk and many more

NUS Extra Card

The NUS Extra Card allows you to get discounts in many high street stores. You can get 25% off in bench if buy one and it’ll only cost you £11 for a standard NUS Extra card or £12.99 for an International Card which will allow you to use it abroad as well as here in the UK. Click here and get your NUS Extra Card.

Tesco Clubcard

Get your tesco clubcard

The Tesco Clubcard is a must have if you shop at Tesco. It works the same as the nectar card but is exclusively applied to tesco, you earn points by simply doing your shopping and remembering to scan your clubcard at the checkout. For every 150 points you earn they send you a £1.50 voucher in the post.

Asda

As well as using the various cash back schemes at other stores you could just shop at Asda which is often a lot cheaper than the other major stores.

Morrisons

And Morrisons is perfect for a lot of minor things you’ll be buying as a student. Morrisons often have the best deals on alcohol for example.

Best Student Bank Account

With all the banks competing to snatch up all the new students it can be a little difficult at first but if you know what to look for you’ll have no problem making the right decision.

So you’ve made it into university and by all means you should be looking forward to it on top of all the studying there will be a lot of partying but, combined they don’t come cheap and you’ll need to learn how to manage your finances. The first thing you should do is open up a student bank account.

The majority of banks offer some sort of student deal and a lot of them are riddled with incentives such as free insurance, rail cards and other goodies. But the best thing to do is ignore the flashy gifts because what you want is an account that is beneficial to your time at university. Being a student can be tough and all though we all try not to borrow money many of us do end up doing just that, borrowing.

You are going to want to find the bank that offers you the biggest interest free overdraft for the longest period as you want to be left with as little debt as possible without having to struggle to pay it back. The overdraft limit is the most important thing here far more than any freebie they offer because money is what will be very very valuable as a student which you’ll soon learn.

Getting ready for your first year

Well it’s nearly the end of the exam season for everyone and you guys are starting to prepare for your first year of university. From the boozy nights, to the lazy days, from the all nighters to the library study sessions. I can honestly tell you that it’ll probably be one of the best years of your life.

But that said you don’t want to start your first year unprepared. So make sure you read through this because it could end up helping a lot.

Accommodation

If you miss out on university homes you are going to need to look for a house near your university, If you don’t want to stay at home that is. Staying at home may not be as fun but you’ll save a few thousand pounds. Make sure that you start looking for a place to stay sooner than later because as we get closer to September more of the nicer houses are rented by students and you might end up living in one of the bad homes in the area and that won’t be good. Accommodation for Students is a good site to start looking. And if you do have to look for a home without your university make sure you get to know your potential housemates as well as possible, you don’t want to end up with the worst housemate ever. So make sure you’ll be comfortable living with them.

After you’ve sorted out a home make sure you buy all your household necessities such as cutlery and toiletries.

Money

Most of you will be getting your student loans and you’ll never have had a bigger grin on your face than when you a take look at that bank balance after getting the first part of it. When you have a fair bit of cash you get the sudden urge to spend but I say STOP! And think about how much you need to get through the first 4 months, this should be the cash needed to cover food and other necessities. Whatever is left will be your party change, use that to enjoy your nights and if it just isn’t enough you should look for a job around your university. September is the best time to start looking and you want to start looking before the start of term, you won’t be the only one looking for a job so it’s better to beat the rush of students. Remember university won’t be fun if your broke for the entire time. There are  bunch of other ways that you can make a little extra cash at university and I will explain them another time so make sure you check back on this site regularly!
